Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy

Welcome to my website! As a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Herbalist and Bio-Identical Hormone Consultant I strongly believe that with each individual I treat in my practice I take into consideration what treatments they have used and what method of treatment they would like to use regarding their illness or condition.

Whether its Western or Integrative medicine, or a blend of both I find that with most people I see positive results and overall improvement in their health.

As for Bio-Identical hormone balancing for women or men it is vital to work with a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable in this field to achieve optimum balance.

Having been in the medical field for over 25 years I have had the pleasure of treating children and adults throughout their life span and have truly enjoyed seeing the progress my patients have made to better their physical, mental and spiritual health!

Bio

Education

  • Bio-Identical Hormones

    • Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHRT) are plant derived hormones made from soy and wild yam. They are called bio-identical as they are structurally identical to the hormones made in the body. These hormones produce the same effects in the body as the effects of the hormones they are supplementing. They are custom compounded which tailors each prescription for an individual based on symptoms and lab interpretation. Hormones are supplied as topical gels, capsules, lozenges or drops under the tongue.

    • Conventional hormone therapies (HRT) are not identical to human hormones. The hormones are not found in nature. For example, Premarin is derived from pregnant mare's urine and medroxyprogesterone is synthetic. There are few standardized doses which may not be the optimum dose for a persons needs.

Testimonials

Carol  Covino

Albuquerque, New Mexico

2014 Fitness New Mexico Champion

"I came to Melissa Parra when I was preparing for my second fitness competition. At the age of 52 it was not easy to put on and retain muscle. I also found that I was constantly fatigued and unable to sleep. The fatigue was interfering with both my goals and my general quality of life.     Melissa was very thorough and used a holistic approach to treating the imbalances in my body. She is professional, knowledgeable and caring. Within a short time I was sleeping through the night and enjoying a higher energy level. In May I competed in the Fitness New Mexico Championship and won 1st place in the Masters Division. You are never too old to achieve your dreams. Thank you Melissa for setting me on a path of health and well being."

Dr. Jeanne Wagner

Santa Fe, New Mexico

"I know you and I are not that old, but do you remember the days when you could count on seeing the same doctor/nurse/health professional for your appointments? Year after year? When the same medico would take the time to look you in the eye, and actually listen to you? And did not keep an eye on the clock or make you feel there was a mental countdown of the minutes ticking away before you were out the door? you want, the "good ole' days" are yours again! I have been a patient of Melissa Parra for over a decade and I can't recommend her more highly. Ms. Parra will be there with you to face your medical future with you. You are not alone. Patients drive in to her office from all over New Mexico to see her. She is truly a New Mexico medical treasure."

Karen Bullard

Tucson, Arizona

"At the end of 2013 I felt like a shell of a person. I was tired all the time, sleeping poorly, no energy or motivation or interest in anything. My 'battery' was so low I wasn't sure it could be charged. Then I made an appointment with Melissa. For the first time in a very long time a health care professional actually listened! Melissa asked questions and listened to the answers. She explained things and answered my questions. After some blood work and a couple of appointments I started feeling better. Melissa worked with me to find the right supplements and gave me advice on diet and exercise. Now, ten months later, I feel like a different person. I wake up feeling rested, I have energy to get through the day. I enjoy my life. Melissa gave me hope. It's refreshing to find an office that is friendly, helpful and caring. Thank you, Melissa!"

Sharon Neal Dreyfus

"For many years I have been suffered with chronic insomnia seeking help with several sleep centers and doctors around the country. I failed many herbal and homeopathic remedies and refused medication for insomnia. I was referred to Melissa Parra for a Physical and GYN exam and after an extensive conversation she prescribed a regiment of hormone therapy that amazingly improved my sleep. During subsequent visits she modified my program which further enhanced my sleep. She has truly changed the quality of my life. I am grateful, not only for her medical knowlede but also for her willingness to listen to me. Bottom line-I highly recommend Melissa!"

Jessica Rinaldi, BA, CPT

Lifestyle/Wellness Coach and Nutrition Specialist

"As a fitness and nutrition professional for 14 years I have been pushing my physical limitations within the Professional Figure Competition and have been blessed to be a 4 time undefeated World Figure Champion.  The downside of pushing your body to its physical peak are the repercussions in bringing your body to a normal state.  I met Ms. Parra who ran a full metabolic screening via blood and Body Scan machine. Melissa used the results to devise a natural treatment plan for me to return my hormone levels to a healthy range. I am very particular who I endorse or trust with my health and I was beyond impressed with her knowledge and genuine care that I send the majority of my clients to her. Thank you Melissa for providing such an amazing and much needed service!"

J.D. Johnson, MPA, Lead Personal Trainer

Defined Fitness Juan Tabo

"As a lead personal trainer for Defined Fitness, I have been improving the health and wellness of seniors for over 7 years. I became a patient of Melissa's earlier this year in search of improved methodology for monitoring my health and wellness as I have a family history of various types of cancer. Melissa gave me a clear direction in nutrition along with a detailed understanding of my lab anaylsis which included  cardiac markers, hormone levels, cancer markers, glydemic and inflammatory markers. My body composition was completed with BMR (basal metabolic rate),  body fat and lean mass percentages. I left her office with with a piece of mind I have not experienced with another healthcare provider. Melissa provides a valuable service that can benefit people regardless of their age, health or activity level. I am pleased to work with her on a personal and professional level."

Michael Donathan

"Melissa is the to-go health care professional for me and many of the athletes on my team who are interested in general weight loss or overall health. I work with her to keep my hormone levels in check and have seen miraculous results in many of her patients. I am very glad to have her on my side!"

Nicole Finch

"I experienced weight gain, mild depression, mood changes, low energy, constipation and dry skin.  I was referred to Melissa Parra and from my first visit I knew I was in the right hands.  She listened to how I felt and her treatment saved my life. I am back to being me and am so happy to have my life back. I will be forever grateful!"
